The Beginnings of Roulette

Roulette is one of the most-played games in casinos today; especially now that the game has also become available in various online casino sites.  But did you know that the Roulette wheel was actually invented by famed mathematician Blaise Pascal quite by accident?

From the Mid-1600s to Mid-1800s

Blaise Pascal started the Roulette wheel some time in the mid-1600s where it remained unchanged for several centuries.  Come the 1840s, the game was further developed by two natives of France, where they put in zero to the options in the numbers of the wheel.  Where before only the numbers from one to thirty-six were among the spots you can place your bet on; now there is also the zero as an added option.

There is an urban legend covering the story of these two natives of France who further enhanced the Roulette game.  It is said that they made a bargain with the devil himself in return for the secrets in winning the game.  While it has remained an urban legend up to the present times, one would be quite convinced that there might be some truth to this for the reason that the sum of the numbers one thru thirty-six is actually a triple six, regarded as the number of the devil.

But devil or not, the game’s popularity never wavered even if it was actually barred from being played in regions in France.

By this time, the Roulette game’s popularity has even reached across the seas; particularly in the United States.  When it reached the US, the game was again enhanced by adding another set of zeros to the singular zero on the table.  This double zero is again another betting option for the players.

Roulette Today

Most casinos today either have the American Roulette with its double zero feature or the European Roulette with the single zero option; or both.  The addition of the double zeros in the American Roulette actually increases the house edge, making it easier to win in its European counterpart.

In both versions however, game play is typically similar where the players can place bets inside or outside the Roulette board; and the winner is determined by the ball once the wheel stops spinning and the ball lands on a particular spot or number on the board.
